Apologies

I have been deeply lax about updating this regularly. Life-stuff kinda got in the way.

But today a hug appeared in my inbox, and reminded me of this project, so here it is:

This brings us to 10 out a 1,000,000. Long way to go. Thanks for sending me your hug!! :)

The first two of this post are from my lovely sister.

The first is of her and her hubby in FREEZING cold Edinburgh on New Year's Eve:

The second is of them the day of their wedding:

And this one from Tom, with a story:

"I'm the person in the middle of the photo. It was a fairly random hug, for no good reason other than folks being a bit drunk at someone's birthday and deciding hugs were a good idea at the time. I really quite like this photo (for obvious reasons).

Tom."

Thanks guys!!

This brings us to 7 out of 1000000. Keep 'em coming!!

Since I am starting to actually receive pics and emails from people, I thought it was time to spread across the internet a little more.

To that end, One Million Hugs is now on Twitter, and there is a Facebook group. Please join and follow, and pass on to everyone you know.

Thanks to those who are participating. It made my day this morning to find your hugs in my inbox.

Thank you for being the first to send me hugs, and prove that the idea is spreading. :)

This brings us to 4 out of 1000000. Long way to go, but a journey has to start somewhere.

This is a project to collect one million pictures of people hugging. While I, on my own, can probably collect quite a few, I want to harness the power of the internet to make sure I have as diverse a selection of pictures as possible.

To participate, all you need to do is take a photo of two (or more!) people you care about hugging each other, or have someone take a photo of you hugging someone you care about, and email it to me at onemillionhugs[at]gmail[dot]com. I will post it here with or without attribution, as you wish. Don't forget to tell me whether you want people to know who you are.

If you wish, you may add a story or a blurb, but that is certainly not necessary. Simply the picture is sufficient.

The final step is to tell as many people about this as you can, so that word will spread and more people will send me their hugs.

Once I hit the one million mark I will do two things. One is to create a large, physical collage of all one million pictures. The second is to create an online electronic version of that collage. I am not sure exactly of the details of how I will do that yet, but I do suspect it will take a while for me to get to a million, and I have some time to work that out.

Why am I doing this? Simple. I believe that the Beatles had it right: All you need is love. Love is powerful, and important, and often gets short shrift in this world. I want to do something big and beautiful that is all about love. All kinds of love. Romantic love, friendship love, family love, and all the other kinds floating around in the world. And I want it to be engaging and and to share it with people. I think this could turn into something gorgeous, but if it doesn't, at the very least it may cause some people to hug each other, increasing the amount of love and connection in the world. And that, too, is a Good Thing.

Help me. Take a photo. Send an email. Spread the word. Let's make something big and beautiful.
